Ugh. I hate all my clothes!
Okay, maybe “hate” is a little bit of an exaggeration and what you really just feel is bored/tired but that doesn’t make this any less of a problem, does it? And it’s even all the more frustrating when one can’t just go on a shopping spree at will. *Side eyeing my bank account like…*
But this happens to us all really, so don’t worry, you’re not alone :). In fact, this is me like, every other day. It’s just human nature: we’re an insatiable species and no matter how fabulous our wardrobes are, there will come a time when we just get bored and want more.
Anyhow, it’s time to break that boredom with these simple tips. 😉
Keep Your Most-Worn Clothes Away For A While.
Yes, Seriously. Put them in a box, lock the box and give the key to your meanest sibling to keep. The idea is to help you see that there’s life outside your most-worn clothes. And It’ll also motivate you to get creative and find ways to wear your previously neglected (but perfectly wearable) clothes. Besides, some fashion studies done by some smart people somewhere show that most people only wear about 20% of their wardrobes, anyway. The best part is, when you finally give yourself access to these clothes after a few months (or weeks as the case may be), it’d be like you just went shopping for new clothes. Trust me on this one, I’ve tried it.
Try A Capsule Wardrobe
Basically here’s what a capsule wardrobe is in case you’re new to the term: You select a number of your clothes which you’ll wear over a period of time, say a month, and stick to them; resisting the urge to reach for other clothes when you get stuck. Pieces you select for your capsule wardrobe should be versatile items that you consider essentials and that can easily mix and match. The idea is to help you get creative with styling and eventually recognise that you can do more with less and nothing warms my heart more. Cassie Daves has a full guide to building a Capsule Wardrobe here on her blog. PS: Don’t forget to take a picture of your outfit everyday. 😉

Invite Your Most Stylish Friend Over
…for what I like to call a styling party. So invite your friend over, get food and drinks (…because if anyone invites me to their place without the prospect of food, I’m not going! :p), and get them to look through your wardrobe and try different outfit combinations for you. You’d be surpised what he/she could come up with that you were previously blind to. Plus it’s gonna be so much fun playing dress up. Just don’t spill anything on your clothes sha.;)
Empty your Wardrobe. Completely. Then Rearrange.
Slip into your comfiest house clothes and convince yourself you are about to embark on a therapeutic exercise. Don’t worry, the joy of finding pieces you’d completely forgotten you had would be so worth it. Plus, rearranging your clothes differently will definitely give you some new outfit ideas. Another win. So basically, it’s just like shopping except that it’s from your own wardrobe and you are responsible for cleaning up after yourself.
Unless you have little siblings you can bribe into doing it for you. And If like me, your wardrobe is so small that you can see everything you own at a glance, just forget I said anything and move right on to the next tip; this tip is not for us. 😥
Switch Up Your Make Up/ Hairstyle
If you can’t do anything about your wardrobe (for waterver reasons from being lazy like moi, too busy or having no stylish friends) that’s fine, at least you can change your hairstyle and make up. Doing something different to your hair always changes the way your outfit looks. That’s a given. And as for make up, most of us usually stick to a template (winged eyeliner and soft lips for me) and changing that template can refresh your look in subtle but exciting ways. Don’t know much about make up? Youtube to the rescue!
Refresh Your Look With Accessories
Instead of going out to buy new clothes (assuming you are related to Sarkodie and money no be problem), sometimes accessories are all you really need to breathe new life into that tired wardrobe. So instead, consider buying a new bag in a bold new colour or get some statement neckpieces that’d turn heads. This tip tends to be underestimated but it’s so effective, it’s almost magical.
